A new web application called Crazy Egg is poised to make a huge splash in the web development world. This application tracks the precise location of clicks on your website. This is extremely helpful when it comes to analyzing your site and tweaking it to the patterns of your users.

But the real "cool factor" of the site is the way that it presents the information. There are two forms of data reports. One is a key that displays where users clicked and how those clicks compare to the total number of clicks on the page. Basically you can see if one area generates 95% of your clicks, or 5%.

Seen Crazy Egg ScreenshotThe second data report is a heat map. This looks like an infrared view of your page with areas that generate the most amount of clicks looking the "hottest." It is very cool and allows you to quickly make sense of large amounts of data.

I had a chance to play with the tool and all it takes is dropping one line of code into your site and waiting for the clicks to accumulate. I'm not sure how the pricing will be structured as it is still private. But as of now you have a certain amount of clicks that can be tracked and a certain amount of time they can be tracked for. Once either is reached, the data is archived for future viewing.

Another interesting point is the distinction between click-tracking and eye-tracking. Some of our local competitors seem to sell eye-tracking tests as a part of their development process. Personally I feel that click-tracking is much more valuable. We create websites to faciliate actions from our users. I really don't care what they look at, I care what they click on. These actions are the most important metric.

This application is one to keep an eye on as it will help developers better understand the behavior of their users. And that is a good for everyone.
